Alleged violent behavior led to temporary suspension of Houston-area doctor's license, TMB says

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (KTRK) -- The license of a Houston-area doctor was temporarily suspended after he was arrested multiple times due to intoxication and violent behavior, among other allegations, the Texas Medical Board said.

Dr. Derrick Anthony Mitchell most recently worked as an emergency room doctor at St. Luke's Health Woodland Hospital, although the hospital told Eyewitness News he hasn't worked there since January.

Eyewitness News found records showing Mitchell was arrested at least six times this year, including for harassment of a public servant and assault on a family member.

In a statement on Friday afternoon, the Texas Medical Board said its disciplinary board temporarily suspended his medical license without notice on June 5. The panel added that they determined that if Mitchell continued to practice medicine, it would be a threat to public welfare.

Records show he was arrested in Montgomery County for drug possession on Feb. 1. The Texas Medical Board said that Mitchell was hallucinating and expressing suicidal thoughts while in possession of 77 grams of THC gummies. In April, Mitchell was convicted of the charge.

On March 9, the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office said it was called out to a family disturbance at a Spring apartment complex. According to court documents, Mitchell was under the influence of alcohol and had to be taken to the hospital because of suicidal statements he'd made to his fiancé.

While at the hospital, he's accused of spitting in a deputy's face and telling the deputy he'd given him syphilis. Mitchell was charged with harassment of a public official, but that charge was later dismissed.

On March 22, Precinct 4 was called back to the Spring apartment complex. They say Mitchell was attempting to get into his ex-girlfriend's apartment and that he vandalized her brother's car when his attempt failed. That same month, he's accused of assaulting and choking a different woman.

His sixth arrest of the year came on May 2, when court documents say he punched and slapped his "baby mama" after pushing her down.

Last week, the Texas Medical Board's disciplinary panel voted to temporarily suspend his license.

The Texas Medical Board said that a temporary suspension hearing will be held soon, and that the suspension will remain in place until the Board takes further action.

Mitchell appeared on ABC13 in 2015 to discuss a range of summer-themed medical topics, including heat exhaustion.

In addition to his arrests in 2026, he was convicted of DWI in 2007. He was also charged with deadly conduct in 2022 in Montgomery County, but that charge was dismissed in 2025 after he completed deferred adjudication.
